You collect artifacts for towns and dungeons and put them on a sprawling world map, deciding on the best placement for bonuses, which can impact everything from finding a rare monster for recruitment to factoring into which quests you can access. In Legend of Mana, you’re building out the world on the map just as much as you are fighting in it. I go back to it every few years just to see if my feelings will change, and every time I still see its magic – even if it didn’t always perfectly hit the target. Legend of Mana has its flaws, but it was also wise beyond its years in some of its systems and storytelling. I land on the side that sees it as the last great Mana game before Square Enix struggled with the franchise’s direction. It resulted in an entry that’s just as celebrated as it is disliked. Sure, it had rabites, big boss battles, and its trademark action combat featuring co-op, but Legend of Mana’s structure is much different than previous titles (more on that later). When Legend of Mana hit PS1 in 2000, it threw me for a loop, as it wasn’t a typical entry for the franchise. I love getting lost in the series’ vibrant worlds, taking on larger-than-life baddies, and being taken with the stellar music – both poignant and adrenaline-pumping – that never disappoints. It was integral in developing my love for RPGs and I created powerful memories that I’ll always cherish by bonding with my grandpa over Secret of Mana. All-in-all this was an above average game for me and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of lighthearted action RPGs.I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the Mana series. It was very obvious that the voice acting budget was lower than usual. There were time when it would be so cringey that I would have to hit X to skip it. The only thing that bothered me about the game was the voice acting. The game does have multiple endings which lends to its high replayability. Which you can change to at any moment throughout the game. The musical score is amazing, which is expected of Square nowadays and I love the fact that they included the original 16 bit soundtrack. The gameplay is very fun and reminiscent of FFVII Remake in that you have to constantly change between your characters in order to be effective in battle. The characters have simple but interesting stories. It's a quality game, but some poor design choices didn't elevate it. The sounds are really good, and very nice music. Yet they can push a credit sequence of 12 minutes without interruptions. Example: the ending is a succession of 9-10 loading screens between small sequences of 30-60 secondes. The worst of this game are the loading screens. Changing classes is dubious and barely interesting.

The fighting is the most interesting part. The animations feels robotic when a character talks. The graphics are superb but they lack a variety of expressions. The story is on the border line generic, with a fair emotional ending.

The graphics are superb but they Trial of mana is a cute type of ARPG. If you like JRPGs then this is definitely worth picking up. But considering how good everything else is, it's easy to forgive those flaws. A few story scenes could have also benefitted from a retooling, as the characters make some bone-headed decisions along the way (looking at you, Riesz). The missing multiplayer is unfortunate (though understandable), and the difficulty is fairly low even on hard mode. And of course the soundtrack is amazing as well. The game is a joy to play, and the multiple characters and large amount of character customization makes it highly replayable. By taking the story, characters, and design philosophy of the original and combining it with a modern take on combat and cutscenes, Trials of Mana manages to be very faithful to the original while still feeling fresh.
